Cody Saxton, MD is an Amsterdam-based polymath: artist, medical doctor, executive and philosopher—best characterized as a Utopian with highest value on the commitment to seeking truth and justice, both within and in the world.
As a creative, Cody works from the state of “Flow,” making artworks as an endeavor in trusting the intuition and exploring the whole self: seeing and knowing all parts of oneself. Recent works revolve around themes of femininity, masculinity, and adrogeny, avian biology, the Shadow Self, healing and shamanism. Individual character studies emerge through an Automatic Drawing/Painting process—-no planning, sketching or corrections—simply an act of celebrating and reveling in authentic expression and the joy of mark-making.
As a doctor, the goals are empowerment for patients to act for their own health, strength and quality of life, and to facilitate the use of resources of allopathic medicine in a wider perspective. The individual’s health does not exist in a vacuum, so surely the physician who is truly acting in patients’ best interest seeks the reformation of a culture that are often at odds with healthy behaviors, in line with evidence-based practice and current clinical translation of basic medical science.
Though the world often sees these two endeavors as diametrically opposed, art and medicine are both practices of Truly Seeing paired with Visionary Action. Curiosity, creativity, care and attention to detail are critical in both. The Doctor-as-Creative models self-care through attention to the non-verbal language of the body—a vocabulary that has been denigrated in the industrialized world, much to the detriment of human thriving.
